1 Day West Highlands: Glencoe & Loch Lomond

Our first stop is Linlithgow Palace, where Mary, Queen of Scots first saw the world. Though roofless now, its stone walls still echo with the laughter and whispers of monarchs long gone. Standing by its great loch, it is easy to picture the regal processions that once filled its halls.

A short journey takes us to The Kelpies, towering at 30 meters, the largest equine sculptures in the world. These mythical beasts, inspired by Scotland’s legendary water horses, shimmer in the daylight—guardians of history and industry, frozen in steel.

Crowning its volcanic rock, Stirling Castle commands the land below, just as it has for centuries. The site of battles, coronations, and betrayals, it was once home to the Stuart kings and queens. From its ramparts, the land stretches out, revealing the echoes of the battlefield of Bannockburn, where Robert the Bruce secured Scotland’s independence.

Next, we reach Doune Castle, a stronghold of medieval Scotland, known to many as Castle Leoch from Outlander, Winterlfell in Game of Thrones , and even the backdrop for Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Its thick walls have seen feasts, battles, and betrayals, and still stand as a silent witness to the passage of time.

As we journey deeper into the Highlands, we take a moment to visit Scotland’s beloved Highland cows. With their long, shaggy coats and gentle eyes, they are as much a part of this land as the hills themselves.

A vast, open moorland unfolds before us—Rannoch Moor, a place of haunting beauty. Here, the land stretches wide and wild, untouched, a reminder of Scotland’s raw and rugged nature.

The road bends, and suddenly, Glencoe reveals itself. Towering peaks rise on either side, their faces scarred by time. This is a place of breathtaking Scenery. We take time to walk amidst its beauty, breathing in the crisp mountain air, feeling the weight of history in the silence of the glen.

A traditional Highland lunch awaits at Clachaig Inn, a place where travelers have gathered for centuries to share stories, warmth, and good Scottish fare.

Further west, Castle Stalker emerges from the waters of Loch Laich. A lone tower, marooned on its own little island, it looks like something out of a fairy tale—a true medieval stronghold. A perfect place to toast the day that is in it with a dram of Scotland’s finest Whisky.

The road takes us along the shimmering shores of Loch Linnhe, its waters reflecting the sky above. This sea loch is where the Highlands meet the coast, a land of fishermen, islands, and endless horizons.

Our journey then leads to Kilchurn Castle, standing proud on the shores of Loch Awe. The crumbling ruins, set against a backdrop of misty hills, tell tales of clan rivalries, battles, and Highland warriors.

As we turn south, Loch Lomond spreads before us—Scotland’s largest and most famous loch. Nestled along its shore, the charming village of Luss welcomes us with its stone cottages, flower-filled gardens, and peaceful shores. A perfect place to breathe in the Highland air one last time.

The final stretch of our journey takes us past Glasgow, its skyline marking a return to modern Scotland. Once an industrial powerhouse, now a city of art, culture, and music, it stands as a testament to Scotland’s ever-evolving story.

As we return to Edinburgh, the echoes of the Highlands linger. The mountains, the glens, the castles—they are not just places, but experiences that stay with you, woven into the fabric of memory. This is the Scotland of legend, of warriors and poets, of kings and dreamers.
